What’s Your Pet’s Score?

What does normal look like? Your pet’s stool quality can provide valuable information about their gastrointestinal health. Check out our fecal scoring chart and talk to your veterinarian about how nutrition can help achieve and maintain a perfect score!

Directions for use: Score stools individually from 1 (liquid) to 5 (formed and dry). When consistency of the stool is not homogenous, record the lower score.


FECAL SCORING SYSTEM FOR CATS


Score 1

Cat fecal score 1
Entirely liquid stool (no texture) or liquid stool with minimal consistency.

Score 2

Cat fecal score 2
Very wet, but not liquid, stool.

Score 3

Cat fecal score 3
A moist stool with no cracks. It has a distinct shape.

Score 4

Cat fecal score 4
This stool has a clearly defined shape with visible cracks. Its surface may be slightly damp but is still well formed.

Score 4.5

Cat fecal score 4.5
This stool has very clearly defined cracks. The outside is very dry and the inside is almost dry.

Score 5

Cat fecal score 5
Hard, dry, crumbly stool. Difficult for cats to pass.

Score 1

Dog fecal score 1
Entirely liquid stool (no texture).

Score 1.5

Dog fecal score 1.5
Liquid stool with minimal consistency.

Score 2

Dog fecal score 2
Very wet, but not liquid, stool. Cow patty-like texture with no define shape.

Score 2.5

Dog fecal score 2.5
A moist stool, with little consistency and no real shape. No visible liquid.

Score 3

Dog fecal score 3
A moist stool with no cracks. It does have a distinct shape.

Score 3.5

Dog fecal score 3.5
A moist stool with a more distinct shape.

Score 4

Cat fecal score 4
This stool has a clearly defined shape with visible cracks. It leaves very little residue on the ground when picked up.

Score 4.5

Dog fecal score 4.5
This stool has very clearly defined cracks. The outside is very dry and the inside is almost dry. Leaves no residue on the ground when picked up.

Score 5

Dog fecal score 5
Hard, dry, crumbly stool. Difficult for dogs to pass.
